DEPARTMENT AT A GLANCE

The Department of Chemistry was inaugurated in the 2023-24 academic session, following the introduction of the Science Stream as an additional stream in the provincialised Salbari College. This initiative was undertaken by the Government of Assam, guided by the Hon’ble Chief Minister: Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Hon’ble Education Minister: Dr. Ranoj Pegu. Currently, the department adheres to the syllabus of four-year undergraduate program (FYUGP) as prescribed by Bodoland University, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP-2020). Currently, the department operates with a team of three highly qualified and experienced Assistant Professors. Their collective goal is to offer quality education and foster academic growth among students who might otherwise be deprived of such opportunities.

VISION & MISSION

  • To deliver high-standard education in Chemistry, ensuring comprehensive understanding and proficiency in the subject.
  • To offer educational opportunities to students from economically backward families, helping them overcome financial barriers to pursue their interest in Science.
  • To encourage a culture of research and innovation among students and faculty, promoting scientific inquiry and discovery.
  • To equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in various professional fields, including academia, industry, and research.
  • To engage with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of Science education and contribute to the overall development of the region.
  • To support continuous professional development for faculty members to ensure they remain updated with the latest advancements in Chemistry and pedagogy.
  • To develop and maintain state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities to provide hands- on learning experiences and support advanced research activities.
  • To establish collaborations with other academic institutions, research organizations, and industries to enhance learning opportunities and resources

SWOC ANALYSIS OF THE DEPARTMENT (CHEMISTRY)

  • STRENGTHS
    1. Highly qualified, energetic and experienced faculty members.
    2. All the three faculties of the department have Ph.D. degrees.
    3. Well-equipped laboratory for UG course.
  • WEAKNESSES
    1. Students are from socially, economically and geographically backward region.
    2. Lack of some sophisticated instruments.
  • OPPORTUNITIES
    1. Confidence building through departmental seminars and group discussions.
    2. Personality development through interactive sessions.
    3. Motivation and guidance from the able faculty members for getting higher degrees and to appear in NET, SLET and other competitive exams.
    4. Department gives a platform for students to show their potential talent and knowledge by mentoring through mentor-mentee activities, conducting seminars and giving projects etc.
  • CHALLENGES
    1. To cope-up with the students from rural background.
    2. To teach and conduct practical classes of the students with poor foundation and background.
    3. Scarcity for funds for buying chemicals/instruments.

FUTURE PLANS OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1. To organize national level conference/workshop/seminar in the field of chemical science.
  2. To improve the infrastructural facilities of the department (viz. development of departmental library, departmental smart class, more computer facility and development of research lab etc.)
  3. To collaborate   with   highly reputed   educational   institutions   &   research laboratories for the benefit of students.
